The plant and engineering sector is one of Germany’s most economically important sectors of activity, as well as one of its largest employers.  As a manufacturer of capital goods, the sector has traditionally focused heavily on exports, with around two third of Germany’s mechanical engineering production being exported.

Between businesses in the mechanical engineering sector, their suppliers, and their customers, there is a complex network of B2B and B2C relationships which results in the sector being dominated by companies that are vertically integrated to differing extents.
